Early-onset scoliosis is a definition of scoliosis seen in children under 10 yrs.
As the growth in children in this age group continues, their follow-up and treatment is different than the scoliosis seen in teenage years.
The risk of progression of scoliosis is quite high in children who continue to grow. Although corset application is an treatment option in case of early-onset scoliosis, the need for surgical treatment is higher than in case of adolescent scoliosis.
Surgical treatment of early-onset scoliosis with fusion surgery as in case of scoliosis in adolescents and adult patients is inconvenient for various reasons;
1- If the surgery is done under 5 years of age, the development of the spinal canal is affected
2- If under 8 years of age, lung development and capacity are negatively affected
3- If under 10 years of age, rib cage developments negatively affected
4- If the surgery is done under 10 years of age, the growth will stop in the surgery region.
The fusion process in adolescent and adult patients does not cause problems which are mentioned above
Surgical treatment of early-onset scoliosis should allow both scoliosis correction and patient growth.
Although there are different techniques in the surgical treatment of early-onset scoliosis, MAGNETIC ROD TECHNIQUE is the most useful and the most widely used technique in the world.
