HERNIATED DISC IN LOWER BACK

Abnormal growth of lumbar vertebrae's part to the spinal canal is called lumbar hernia. As a result, the nerve roots going from lower back to legs are trapped.

Although it can be diagnosed in all age groups, it is most seen in the age range of 20-50. Other symptoms of spinal degeneration in patients with advanced age start with lower back pain due to accompanying disc degeneration. Shooting pain to the lower back to legs can be added. This condition is generally referred as SCIATIC.

HOW HERNIA IS DIAGNOSED?

If the above mentioned complaints are present, it is recommended to consult the spine surgeon. Lumbar MRI scan is very important for diagnosis of lumbar hernia. However, normal and moving x-rays are required. In some cases, it may be helpful to perform computed tomography, especially in cases where MRI scan cannot be performed on patients.

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR LUMBAR HERNIA?

Most of the patients with lumbar hernia can be treated with rest, pain reliever, muscle relaxant and physical therapy. A number of injections may be administered to relieve  pain. However, it is not recommended to inject frequently as they may have side effects.

WHEN SURGERY IS REQUIRED?

Chronic pain despite performing therapies listed above

leg muscle weakness,

failure in controling bladder and bowels,

inability to walk on fingertips and / or on heels

Surgical treatment of hernia is usually performed on a very small incision with microsurgery or endoscopic techniques. Instrument is rarely used in hernia surgery. It is important to make detailed interviews with the spine surgeon about the suitability of the technique, it may require (platinum).
