SCOLIOSIS IS NOT CONTAGIOUS. POSTURAL DYSFUNCTION DOESN'T CAUSE SCOLIOSIS.
IDIOPATHIC SCOLIOSIS (THE CAUSE IS UNKNOWN)
It is the most common type of scoliosis. Idiopathic scoliosis is examined in 3 groups according to age ranges;
1- Infantile idiopathic scoliosis occurs between the newborn and the age of 4 years.
2- Juvenile idiopathic scoliosis occurs between the ages of 4 and 9 years.
3- Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis occurs between 10 and 18 years of age.
NEUROMUSCULAR SCOLIOSIS
- Scoliosis resulting from muscle and nerve diseases (meningomyelocele, cerebral palsy etc.).
- It is the second most common type of scoliosis in Turkey.
- Corset treatment is usually not useful.
- Surgical treatment may be required at earlier ages and at lower curvatures.
CONGENITAL SCOLIOSIS
- Scoliosis resulting from some structural anomalies in the spine during the baby development in the womb.
- Cases where the vertebrae cannot be fully formed (hemivertebra).
- Conditions where the spine remains adherent (block vertebrae).
- Cases where both situations are seen together.
- In this type of scoliosis there is a risk of anomaly in other systems (kidney-bladder, heart, etc.).
- If there is no progress between examination and controls, surgery is not required until the child has completed the growth.
- If there is progress between the controls, surgery is required as soon as possible.
